Art Nouveau was the dominant style from 1900 to 1920. This period was characterized by inspiration from nature's elements, animal and plant life.

The style got its name from the Parisian business store L'art Nouveau that opened in 1868 and sold imported Japanese porcelain.

Royal Copenhagen developed during this period the today wellknown underglass decoration. By the year 1900, the much more expensive overglass had become dominant, but this technique did not fit the new style with its dull colors, shadow effects, and animal and plant life. By painting the underglass, you reduced the number of possible colors, but made them flow better and more naturally together.
